The impact of childhood Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease on the family

L'impact de la maladie de Charcot-Marie-Tooth de l'enfant sur la famille

The impact of childhood Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease: the inconclusive grief and the great burden of emotional shock for parents and all family members.

The detection of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease in a child strongly impacts family dynamics and creates a heavy emotional burden for all family members: It is a family grief that sets in and will never end!

One moment, everything seems stable. And then the next, everything is shattered. What's truly unbelievable isn't so much the initial shock, the diagnosis itself, but rather the shockwaves that follow. The ones that silently, but profoundly, reshape an entire family's life.

How does an illness that affects one person become everyone's concern?

CMT, this neurological disease affecting the nerves that connect the brain to the limbs, becomes debilitating, causing muscle weakness and difficulty walking and holding objects. Everyday tasks become a challenge. A profound shock hits the parents, who will forever live with this profound grief that will never end. It's a full-time job, impossible to keep to any schedule. They must constantly care for their child, who needs them more than ever, leading to significant physical and emotional exhaustion.

Parents' professional and social lives have to be completely reorganized. So it's not just a matter of changing their schedule; it's a part of their identity—their career, their friends—that's put aside. It's often more than just putting things aside; it's a renunciation. A fulfilling career becomes a source of stress because they're less available, less flexible. They miss opportunities, and their social life shrinks.
